ESBL Mens Random Draw Tournament
HMP Sudbury - Sunday 23rd November 2008.
A week prior to the tournament I thought that I might have to call the whole thing off as I'd only received 4 names as confirmed participants, in addition to 6 Sudbury inmates. However, after a flurry of last minute emails and phone calls, the overall number rose to 26 and so there was no going back...my first tournament!
26 participants... Ranked into 2 groups of 'good' and 'not as good'.... Pairs selected 1 from each group
2 'round robin' groups of 7 and 6 pairs... 1 game to 21 (with no setting)
The top 2 pairs from each group played the semi finals... Best of 3 games to 21 (with no setting)
The winners for each semi final played the final... Best of 3 games to 21 (with no setting)
Those participating (from clubs: ULC, Stretton, Sudbury, ACE, Burton, GB Landscape, Yoxall, , Ashbourne and Shobnall) played the Group 'round robins', resulting in 2 semi finals between:
1. Group A winners (Abid Hussain and Asad Hussain) v Group B runners up (Van Quach and Inmate Garrett)
2. Group B winners (Aftab Hussain v Mark Chan) v Group A runners up (Ali Latif v Alan Weston)
Semi final 1 winners were Abid and Asad (21-17) (21-3)
Semi final 2 winners were Aftab and Mark (21-12) (21-11)
The final was then won by Abid and Asad (21-12) (21-12)
The award ceremony and photographs followed (attached).
Overall, the tournament seemed to go pretty smoothly (only a few moments of panic on my part) where everyone entered into the spirit of the day, partnering people of a different ability who they might not have met/partnered before, hopefully benefiting from these partnerships and enjoying the occasion as much as I (surprisingly) did.
My thanks go to all who participated, the staff at Sudbury for the hosting the tournament, and to Gail for all of her advice and help on the day.
Please note that the next ESBL tournament will hopefully be in early 2009.
